The Kansas City Tornadoes (1-0) opened their 2019 season with a 110-98 victory over the Raleigh Firebirds (0-1). The game went back and forth with the lead changing hands seventeen times with eleven ties.
The key to the Tornadoes win was the second half performance of multiple Kansas City players. Veteran Renaldo Major led both teams with 30 points, with twenty coming after intermission. Grant Greenberg scored nineteen of his twenty-two point after the half. Tavares Sledge (13), Chris Sterling (11), and Tyshawn Patterson (11) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Tornadoes.
The Firebirds finished with four players in double figures. Keenan Palmore led Raleigh with 21 – with eighteen coming in the second half. Darius Leonard (16), Chris Lightner (12), and Donavan Griffin (12) were among the Raleigh scoring leaders.
Kansas City Coach, Ed Corporal, said afterwards, “I am proud of this group. We fought through some adversity in the second quarter. Tonight’s win was a total team effort. We have to ge3t better each and every time we play. I like the character and the work effort of our players.”
The Tornadoes return to action tomorrow night for a second game against the Firebirds. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
